The Role of DFIs in empowering SMEs for Sustainable Growth and Job Creation

The SADC DFI Chief Executives come together bi-annually to talk about imperative topics related to regional growth and development finance. The latest forum was recently held in Mbombela, South Africa, on November 28, 2024. This time the forum focused on how Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their role in promoting lasting economic growth and job creation.

During the forum, several DFIs shared their successful funding strategies and discussed the difficulties they face in strengthening the SME sector, which is vital for economic progress and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Academics and professionals also joined the discussions, providing both theoretical insights and valuable research about the SME landscape, not just locally but also from other developing areas around the world. This gathering allowed DFIs to learn from each other, sharing experiences and ideas that are essential for better supporting SMEs as a means to drive economic growth.
